Another day. Stopping by as I do from time to time. I have this to come with my mother and I know its going to happen sooner rather than later which fills me with dread no matter how much I try and prepare myself, mentally, for it. I'm sure even the most perfect son/daughter berates themselves for their failings once a beloved parent dies. Please don't be too hard on yourself Doc.[PseudoEmma] 2008-04-19 03:56:14

WTF Over

I hope and pray you will remain safe while you are away, and that you will return home safe and well.  I hope you get some rest and feel rejuvenated really soon.

Love,

sorry to hear about your dad. i know how it can be. my grandma (who was like my mother) had about 7 strokes in 1 1/2 yrs. She passed away in november. I know how hard it is...but sometimes i believe that up there is the best place for them. The pain goes. My gran knew us...but wasn;t living in the present. I hope your dad either gets better....or doesn't suffer for long. And no i don't wish for your dad to die...but if he's suffering, it's better in heaven for him.

Good luck, best wishes...and you and your family are in my prayers and thoughts.

Oh no, Z.  This is just tragic.  I am so sorry for you and your family, and your poor dad, who is so confused.  My heart is heavy with this news.  It was a horrible, rotten thing to happen.  I have often heard of men getting hit on the head and thinking they are still in the war, but I didn't think it really happened.  I am soooo sorry, Z.  I will step up my prayers for you, your family and your dear dad.  I pray for God's will in this situation.

One more time!

Saw this on a friends blog and thought you (and any like-minded others that you know) may appreciate the sentiment. Have a wonderful Xmas Doc.

A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,

Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,

"I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,

I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..

Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

PLEASE, Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. Service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

Smile  Hullo Z

I always knew you'd be back, NOT AT ALL like a bad penny, more like the recurring refrain of a favourite song.

That's scary, that over 600 folk have been laid off, from a total of just over 700 people .... but as  I think about it, that's the ebb and flow of life, the ocean. economies, and even families. I guess companies function the same way.

I for one am pleased that you're still around, and I hope it'll be for a long time yet!

Listen to the words.

Oh, I just love that song.  I used to sing it in my shows, a loooong time ago.

With regard to leaving the entry posted or removing it, please leave it.  It is really good and it is so true.  You said it out of love and concern for others, and that comes through in your writing.  It might just "speak" to someone who needs guidance.

Some women are in bad, destructive, abusive relationships that can't be fixed, but others are simply in need of the maturity that they should have had on the day they got married.  Commitment is not a word that many married couples fully understand.  It took Hubby and I a while to fully get it, and now that we have, we are happy and at peace with each other, and with ourselves.

God bless you, dear Z.  Thanks for the thought-provoking entry.

Love,

Minty.

2007-08-06 11:21:15

Listen to the words. I've been in the position where I wanted to leave... about a year ago! Funny how things change. It's a different world today than back in the day that you grew up in. Women have more rights  and divorce is common place. NOT to say it's right --- but in some situations, I do think divorce is better for everyone involved.[ColoradoJen] 2007-08-03 07:24:25

Listen to the words. Dr Z,
I almost forgot about this... but back in April of '06, I posted this in my original diary. It kinda goes with everything here...

Make sure of what you are doing when you choose to be with someone for
the rest of your life. Make sure you really know them and that they are
the right one. The saddest thing in life is to find yourself committed
to someone for the wrong reasons. Fate will bite your ass, believe me.
The right one will come along and you will be left bitter and hurting.
Life is just too short to spend it with the wrong one. It does not get
better after the ceremony. People never change, they are who they are.
Make sure you really love who they are. Make sure you have no fantasies
about who they are, that you are looking and seeing reality. Falling in
love is easy, you can do that every day, really loving someone takes
work and effort every single day. It takes knowing that person well
enough to say that all their faults, all the bad sh*t about them is OK,
because you have to love the whole person, the good and the bad. You
have to be willing to understand what in life is important to them and
if it is different from what you want be willing to say OK I can live
with that, never try to change their dreams and goals to match yours
you will destroy both of you and all of yours dreams and their dreams
in the process. Marriage is a major decision, never to be taken
lightly, never think to yourself that if it doesn't work well then I
can just get out of it. If you make a full commitment to someone, make
it a lifelong commitment, not a I hope this will work one. Go into it
with your eyes wide open! If you can't
commit 110% of yourself,
then you are doing both of you a major disservice, that you will both
pay for in the end. I don't care if it's the night before your wedding
and you've invited 1000 people and they are all attending, you've spent
a zillion dollars that you borrowed at 50% interest and will be paying
on it the rest of your life, if you have one true doubt, one true
misgiving...
DO NOT GET MARRIED!!!!!!!
Better to be embarrassed now than to realize a couple months or years
down the road that you made a horrible mistake. I wish someone had told
me that 25yrs ago. I would not have gotten married. We got married for
all the wrong reasons and we have both paid dearly for it.

[Iusedtobesomeone]
2007-08-02 14:45:57

Listen to the words. Please leave it. I struggled for many, many years (26) to make a marriage work that there really was no hope for. My divorce was finalized today. If more people, men and women both, really put the effort into working on happiness, maybe more would stay married. Relationships take work! Nothing worth having is ever easy. Too many times young couples get together with the idea that if it doesn't work they can get a divorce. Divorces hurt, they hurt everyone involved, but get married without your fingers crossed while you are saying your vows, or just don't do it. Thank you for posting the song and your words of wisdom.

Not what we hoped

Dearest Z,

I'm so sorry to learn that you had such an unhappy Father's Day, and that things are not good between you and your father at the moment.  You did the right thing in taking him to the hospital.  I am so sorry that he is so unwell.

I had a TIA a couple of years ago.  It only lasted an hour, but it was terrifying.  I felt that I was having a stroke.  Nothing I read or looked at made sense to me, and I couldn't string a sentence together with any success.  I was all there, mentally, but I couldn't make myself understood or make any sense of what I was reading, because I was writing emails when it struck.  I wasn't frightened when it happened, but afterwards, I wondered if it was going to happen again and if I was going to remain that way.  I went to the mirror to check for slackness in the muscles in my face, but all was normal.  An MRI scan revealed the truth a month later.  I had not had a stroke, so it must have been a TIA.

Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time.

Love,

Minty.

Not what we hoped I'm so sorry to hear that your dad is not doing any better, and I hope that he heals soon. I know how hard it is to watch someone go thru the stages of their life knowing there may not be much time left. I'm 32, my dad just turned 70 and in the last 5 years I've really seen him slow down quite a bit, and I'm wondering if some dementia or something else is starting within him. It's scary to think about losing my dad. I'm thinking of you and your family![ColoradoJen] 2007-06-30 10:16:04

Hugs to you Z,

Your siblings and you have been so fortunate to have your father still with you, all these years. I was 19 when my dad passed away, and it's difficult to live without a daddy - when one is only just striking out into the world. I will continue to hold you in my heart during this difficult time.

Love

Not what we hoped Sorry to hear the news about your Dad, DrZ. Hopefully with the better standard of care he'll receive at this different hospital, his recovery will progress quicker. xx[Catpea33] 2007-06-27 14:08:26

Expecting replies to your posts. Ah Z... sorry to hear about your dad... hoping things go better...
I am a reader and thinker rather than a writer I suppose... so youre one of the lucky few who gets a comment... I enjoy reading your "thoughts" and although I dont know you, only about you, maybe it's your independence of not needing the comments that made me write (and the first posts were get well wishes I believe)... hoping your high in spirits and health... regards to family... Expecting replies to your posts. Well said. And I have to add that when it's obvious people are after comments (like ending entries with 'Please comment!') then it's a huge turnoff and makes me less likely to comment! For what it's worth, with me your advice has always been spot-on and I always appreciate what you have to say about my uninteresting life! x[Catpea33] 2007-06-21 12:20:31

Expecting replies to your posts. Awww --- sorry to hear about your dad! Just read your previous entry! I'm not sure how old your dad is, but I come across people in the rehab facility that I work in ALLL the time who say they are ready to die. As sad as it is - you can understand in some fashion --- they've seen their kids grown up, their grandkids - and some even have great grand kids. They've lived their life, and now they are just sick of not being able to everything they were able to a few years earlier! I know it's a totally different perspective when it's your own family member vs. a stranger. I hope he feels better soon!!!!!!!![ColoradoJen] 2007-06-21 00:29:51

Another wise post from the Doc. I used to get upset when I first started posting here and not many people commented, but now I have just a few people who read and comment regularly and that's fine. If others are reading and not commenting that doesn't bother me so much anymore, because words are powerful things and they may change something or someone without me ever knowing and that's the important thing...it's not a popularity contest. Smile

Expecting replies to your posts. i agree...i mean ive typed several pages where i ask questions and sometimes they get answered and the rest of the time they dont...but i dont really care because i just asked them because i didnt want to ask them out loud...but some people on MDD are, like you said, here just to get comments...what they probably dont know is that if they want to get comments and such they should be on netlog or myspace with their friends instead of on a site where people pour their hearts out...but i totally agree with you on everything you said!!!![mustrecollect19] 2007-06-20 10:50:25

My diary is private because it's for me. I think that's something that often gets lost in translation as people post pictures for comments.

Anyway, nice entry.

Parents often say that their kids can be so ungrateful. I found with mine that that knife cuts both ways.

I'm sorry you didn't have a very happy fathers day.

Happy Father's day..... my arse! Sorry to hear about your Dad, Dr Z. I hope he gets better and that your relationship with him gets back on track. xx[Catpea33] 2007-06-18 14:57:38

Happy Father's day..... my arse! Hi Z,

I had to smile at the title of your entry this morning. On reading your entry; Congratulations to your wife on her new job, as for your dad, as I read I suspected a stroke.
Good thing you got him to the hospital so quickly.I figure that if you're 60-something, then he must be 80-something, huh?? Getting on a bit!

No - my dear, your relationship will never be the same, but I don't believe it's because of this weekend. I think that he has turned a corner in his mind, and perhaps, no longer wishes to live also, perhaps he doesn't take pleasure in seeing you, who are so adamant about LIVING until you die!!! You are, after all, still able to make your own decisions and carry them through to the end.

Wishing you a late, late, late Happy Fathers' Day.

This is a difficult time of life for him and your mother, you have probrably already organised with your brothers and sisters, how you will handle your parents old age, possible senility, long-term illness, dementia?? Actually, I must get on to that with my own brothers and sisters, concerning our Mum. She's only 73 yet, but better to have plans in place - just in case.

Hugs

Happy Father's day..... my arse! Dr. Z, Sorry to hear about your dad.  I hope he gets well soon.  I do have to agree with you though, if the same thing happened again, I too would do the same thing.  As for the relationship not being the same, just be happy to have him still around!! Truisms in life.

I just wanted to clarify something I said in my last comment.  I said that comfort figures in my life far more than it ever has.  Well, by that, I meant comfort, as opposed to the latest fashion.  There is no sense in wearing the tightest, sexiest jeans and the highest heels when you are dying from stomach pains and bunions.  If a fashion doesn't flatter me or if it is uncomfortable, it has no place in my wardrobe.
